Saturday 27 May with Saghar Setareh and Marta Abbott
In a professional food photography studio in the heart of Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood, Marta and I will guide you through understanding, styling and photographing beautiful images of food and flowers.
Why a Fine Art Flower and Food Photography Workshop?
We’re now living in the era of instagram, where almost every meal starts with at least one person getting on a chair to take a photo of the table top. For some it’s just a hobby, for some it’s business and for others, it’s a creative expression. For many it’s a combination of the three.
People often tell me that my food photos look like paintings. Others wonder how some images shot by a smartphone can result very harmoniously while others don’t.
This workshop aims to teach the basics of creating an artistic image by understanding the light, the forms, the colors, the textures and the composition. You will learn how to apply these basic techniques to your table setting, food styling and flower arrangement as well as how to immortalize the image through photography and photo editing.
Light, and the basics of photography: How light affects objects made of different materials, how to control it, and how to capture it with a camera.
Composition, color, form, texture: How they are applied in photography, table top setting, and flower arrangements.
Floral Design: Basic flower care and prep, the connection between flowers and painting, how to make an individual arrangement with seasonal and foraged flowers.
Food styling and photography session: backgrounds, props, and set-ups.
Editing session with Photoshop Lightroom, VSCO, Snapseed.
The workshop includes:
Theory and practice of the topics
A light lunch
Individual flower arrangement for each attendee

I’m an Iranian graphic designer who fell in love with food in Italy. After many years of drawing since childhood, I continued my art studies first in Tehran’s Art and Architecture Faculty in “Visual Communication”, and later in Rome’s Fine Arts Academy in Editorial Design, with an specialization in Graphic Design and Photography. My food photography is the development of my design studies. I make art meet business through blogging, content creation and professional food photography for editorial and commercial commissions.
Marta Alexandra Abbott
I was born in Amsterdam and grew up between Connecticut and Prague. My studies included painting, drawing, art restoration and floral design. A strong fascination with the natural world’s beauty has always informed my work, both in subject matter and my chosen mediums. Although I now explore floral forms mostly on paper and canvas, I worked in floral design for several years between New York, Rome, and Milan, and have always felt a strong connection between the creative process of making a painting and making a floral arrangement.
